The deputy sheriff pulled over a vehicle on Route 22 in Patterson that allegedly committed a traffic violation Tuesday, Nov. 20.
Upon further inspection, the deputy learned that the vehicle’s driver, 40-year-old John Covias, had a suspended license in addition to two active warrants out from the Duchess County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff then discovered what appeared to be heroin and hypodermic needles in the subject’s possession.
The vehicle’s passenger, 35-year-old Benlynx Garcia, was also discovered to have an active warrant from Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
Both subjects were arrested and taken to the Putnam County Correctional Facility for processing. Covias faces a number of charges, including:
Criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor
Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, an unclassified misdemeanor
Possession of a hypodermic instrument, a class A misdemeanor
Covias was posted $250 cash bail and given an appearance ticket for Town of Patterson Justice Court before being surrendered to Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office as a result of his active warrants.
Garcia was taken to the Town of Patterson Justice Court for arraignment. She was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility on $250 cash bail/$500 bail bond. Garcia posted bail and has been released.
Both subjects are due back in the Town of Patterson Justice Court.
